A temporary worker in Canada is someone who is authorized to enter and work in Canada for a limited period in a specific job. This status is usually granted through a closed work permit.

A closed work permit is an authorization issued by Canada that allows a person to work in Canada for a specific employer, in a specific position, and at a specific location. It is tied to a single employer; therefore, the holder cannot change jobs without obtaining a new permit. This permit is generally issued when the employer has received a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

The Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that confirms a Canadian employer is authorized to hire a foreign worker. Its purpose is to demonstrate that no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available to fill the position, and that hiring a foreign worker will not have a negative impact on the Canadian labour market.
